Brief

Definition

A brief is a short document that defines the objectives, audience, constraints, and expected output for a creative or strategic project — aligning the people doing the work on what they're making and why before they start.

Briefs exist because work without clear direction produces rework. The person commissioning the work knows what they need. The person doing the work needs to know it too, before they start — not after they've delivered a first draft.

A minimal brief answers five questions:

  1. What is the goal? What should change because of this work?
  2. Who is it for? Who will see, read, or use it — and what do they need to take away?
  3. What is it? Format, length, medium.
  4. What constraints apply? Tone, visual guidelines, things that must be included or excluded.
  5. What does success look like? How will we know the work is done?

A good brief is not a specification. A specification tells the doer exactly how to do it. A brief tells them what success looks like and leaves the how open for creative judgment.

Brief quality is directly correlated with output quality. Agencies and freelancers universally report that the main cause of revision cycles is a brief that was vague about objective or audience. The brief that took 20 minutes to write well saves three rounds of revisions.

Briefing sessions are often run at whiteboards — the team aligns on the objective, debates the audience, and agrees on constraints. BoardSnap captures those sessions as structured summaries that become the starting point for the formal brief document.

Examples

  • A campaign brief: goal, target audience, key message, tone, deliverables, and timeline
  • A product brief: customer problem, proposed solution, success metric, and non-goals
  • A design brief: the business problem, the user and their goal, the design challenge, and constraints

BoardSnap turns any whiteboard — including this one — into a summary and action plan.
