Elevator pitch

Definition

An elevator pitch is a concise, 30–60 second verbal description of a product, company, or idea — short enough to deliver in an elevator ride — that communicates what it is, who it's for, why it matters, and what makes it different.

The metaphor is literal: you find yourself in an elevator with a potential investor, customer, or partner, and you have until the door opens to make them care. In practice, the elevator pitch is used in networking conversations, sales introductions, demo openers, investor meetings, and job interviews.

A working structure for an elevator pitch:

  1. What it is — a one-sentence category placement: "BoardSnap is an iOS app for whiteboard capture."
  2. The problem — the specific pain the target customer has: "Most teams walk out of a whiteboard session with a blurry photo and no clear next steps."
  3. What you do — the specific mechanism: "BoardSnap AI reads the board, produces a clean summary, and turns it into a tri-state action plan in about ten seconds."
  4. Why it's different — the differentiator: "Unlike ChatGPT or OneNote, it's project-aware — every board lives inside a project that knows your brand and remembers your pinned context."
  5. The ask or hook — what you want the listener to do or think: "It's free to start. Try it after your next sprint."

Common mistakes: starting with features instead of the problem, using jargon the listener doesn't know, running too long, or ending without a clear next step.

Refinining an elevator pitch is whiteboard work — writing multiple versions, testing them with trusted people, marking what lands and what loses them. BoardSnap captures those drafting sessions as structured notes.

Examples

  • A 45-second pitch opening a product demo for a potential B2B customer
  • A three-sentence investor intro at a networking event
  • A workshop where four team members write their version of the pitch and the group synthesizes the best elements

Snap a elevator pitch. Ship its actions.

BoardSnap turns any whiteboard — including this one — into a summary and action plan.
