Innovation day
Definition
A scheduled event — typically one full day or 24 hours — where teams or individuals pause their regular sprint work and pursue self-directed projects, experiments, or prototypes, usually culminating in a demo to the broader organization.
Innovation days (also called hack days, hackathons, or ship-it days depending on the company) compress the spirit of 10% time into a single focused event. The concentrated format creates social energy that distributed 10% time doesn't: teams form around shared interests, ideas collide, and the demo at the end creates a forcing function.
Typical structure:
- Day before: pitch ideas on a shared doc or whiteboard. Teams self-select into projects.
- Innovation day: build, prototype, or explore. No sprint ceremonies, no customer escalations routed to the teams.
- End-of-day demos: 3–5 minutes per project, no polish required. A panel or all-hands votes on impact and creativity.
