Minimum marketable feature

Definition

A minimum marketable feature (MMF) is the smallest, independently releasable piece of functionality that delivers enough customer value to justify shipping it as a standalone release.

Scott Ambler and Mark Lines popularized the MMF concept in their work on disciplined agile delivery. MMF is a unit of planning and release scoping — a way of breaking a larger feature or project into the smallest chunks that are both valuable to customers and shippable without requiring other pieces to be complete.

The three criteria for a true MMF:

  1. Minimum: It's the smallest scope that still delivers the value. You can't remove any more without breaking the value proposition.
  2. Marketable: Customers care about it enough that you'd put it in a release note or a sales conversation. Not just a technical improvement.
  3. Feature: It's a complete, coherent capability — not a half-feature that requires another MMF to be useful.

MMF is closely related to the 'thin vertical slice' concept in agile: shipping complete end-to-end functionality (even if limited) rather than layers of incomplete work. A thin vertical slice of a ride-sharing app might be: one driver, one rider, one city, one payment method — but the complete flow from request to paid ride.

MMF planning happens at whiteboards during release planning and roadmap sessions. Teams draw out the feature set and then cut it into the smallest shippable chunks, asking of each: 'Could we ship this alone and have users find value?' BoardSnap AI reads those whiteboard sessions and turns the output into a structured action list.

Examples

  • CSV export as an MMF: the full reporting dashboard will take months, but CSV export alone is valuable to analysts right now
  • Single-currency international support: global multi-currency is the vision, but shipping one market (Canada) with CAD is an MMF
  • Email notifications only: full notification center takes a quarter, but email-only notifications for the three most critical events is an MMF
  • Read-only mobile app: full mobile parity is months out, but read-only access with notifications is an MMF that sales can demo

Snap a minimum marketable feature. Ship its actions.
