Process map

Definition

A process map is a visual document that shows the sequence of steps, decision points, handoffs, and roles involved in completing a business or operational process from start to finish.

Process map is a broad term that covers several more specific diagram types — flowcharts, swimlane diagrams, value stream maps, and BPMN diagrams are all types of process maps. In everyday business usage, 'process map' usually means a practical, readable diagram of how work actually gets done, as opposed to how it's supposed to get done on paper.

There are several common formats:

  • Basic process map (top-down flowchart): linear sequence of steps with decision diamonds, no lane structure
  • Cross-functional map / swimlane map: adds ownership lanes so each actor's steps are visually separated
  • Detailed process map: includes inputs, outputs, systems used, and time estimates for each step
  • High-level process map (SIPOC): just five columns — Suppliers, Inputs, Process steps, Outputs, Customers

Process mapping is fundamental to operations improvement. You can't improve what you haven't documented. Organizations use process maps to identify bottlenecks, eliminate rework, standardize training, and prepare for audits or certifications. Teams frequently map processes on whiteboards during Gemba walks, Kaizen events, and continuous improvement workshops. BoardSnap AI reads those sketches and returns a structured summary of the process steps, decision points, and handoffs.

Examples

  • Customer onboarding process map: Contract signed → Kickoff call → Account setup → Training → Go-live → 30-day check-in
  • SIPOC for order fulfillment: Supplier = warehouse; Input = customer order; Process = pick, pack, ship; Output = delivered package; Customer = end buyer
  • IT change management: Change request → Impact assessment → CAB approval → Implementation → Testing → Close
  • HR hiring process: Job req approved → Job posted → Applications reviewed → Phone screen → Interviews → Offer → Onboarding

Snap a process map. Ship its actions.

BoardSnap turns any whiteboard — including this one — into a summary and action plan.
