Product strategy

Definition

A product strategy is a high-level plan that defines what a product is, who it's for, what problem it solves, and how it will compete and grow over time.

Product strategy sits above the roadmap and below the company mission. It answers three questions every team should be able to answer without looking at a slide deck: What are we building? Who is it for? Why will we win?

A strong product strategy has four elements. The target customer — a specific, concrete person or role, not a demographic bucket. The problem — the specific pain or unmet need, not a category. The unique differentiation — the reason your product beats doing nothing or using a competitor. The success metric — how you'll know the strategy is working.

Product strategy is not a roadmap. The roadmap is what you build next quarter. Strategy is why you're building it at all, and why this particular direction is better than the ten alternatives you're not pursuing.

Teams that skip strategy spend too much time in roadmap debates. When the strategy is clear, feature prioritization becomes faster: you simply ask which option best serves the target customer's core problem while reinforcing the differentiation.

For teams that work from whiteboards — strategy maps, opportunity trees, positioning sketches — keeping a clean record of those sessions matters. BoardSnap turns whiteboard strategy sessions into structured summaries and action items you can actually track.

Examples

  • A whiteboard drawing of the opportunity landscape with bets marked high/low confidence
  • A one-page strategy doc that starts: 'We help [target customer] [do X] by [unique mechanism]'
  • An OKR tree rooted in the product strategy statement
  • A positioning map placing the product against three competitors on two axes

Snap a product strategy. Ship its actions.

BoardSnap turns any whiteboard — including this one — into a summary and action plan.
