Mark action items in-progress — BoardSnap's three-state system.
Short answer
Yes. Every BoardSnap action item supports three states: open, in-progress, and done. Tap the state indicator on any item to mark it in-progress. This is the defining feature of BoardSnap's tri-state action item system — the in-progress state represents real work status, not just a halfway checkbox.
## How to mark an item in-progress
Quick tap:
- Tap the state circle on the left of any action item
- One tap moves it from open → in-progress
- Another tap moves it from in-progress → done
- A third tap resets it to open
From the detail view:
- Tap the item to open its detail view
- Find the State selector
- Tap In-progress to set it explicitly
## Why the in-progress state matters
A binary checkbox forces a lie. Either the task is done (it's not) or it's not started (it is). Work rarely lives in those two states — it's in the middle, being worked on.
The in-progress state gives you an honest picture of where work is:
- Open — not yet started; needs an owner to pick it up
- In-progress — someone is actively working on it; don't assign it to someone else
- Done — complete; verify and close it out
## When to use it
In the meeting. If the board shows work that's already underway, mark those items in-progress immediately after the analysis. Walk out of the room with an accurate status snapshot.
During the day. As team members start items from the list, update them to in-progress. This keeps the list honest between meetings.
At standup. Filter by in-progress to see exactly what's being worked on right now — no interpretation needed.
## Does in-progress sync anywhere?
State changes in BoardSnap are saved in your project. They don't sync to Jira, Linear, Asana, or any other tool automatically. Export the list after updating states to share the current status snapshot with the team.
Frequently asked
Can I filter the action item list to show only in-progress items?
The list can be filtered by state. Use the filter options in the board view to show only open, in-progress, or done items.
Do subtasks have their own in-progress state?
Yes. Each subtask is independently stateful. A parent item can be in-progress while some subtasks are done and others are still open.
