Answer

How BoardSnap turns a whiteboard into an action item list.

Short answer

After you snap a whiteboard, BoardSnap AI reads the board and automatically generates an action item list. Each item has three states: open, in-progress, and done. The AI also generates subtasks for complex items. You can edit any item, change its state by tapping, add due dates, and export the full list.

## From snap to action items

The process is automatic. You snap the board — BoardSnap AI reads it, identifies tasks, decisions, and next steps from the content, and organizes them into a structured action item list. You don't write the list manually; the AI builds it from what's on the board.

The full workflow is Snap. Analyze. Execute. — the Execute step starts with the action item list.

## The three states

Every action item exists in one of three states:

  • Open — not yet started
  • In-progress — actively being worked on
  • Done — complete

This is what makes BoardSnap's action items different from a standard to-do list. The in-progress state is not just a halfway checkbox — it represents real, meaningful work status. You can mark an item in-progress in the meeting and have an accurate status picture by the time you leave the room.

## Subtasks

For complex action items, BoardSnap AI auto-generates subtasks. If the board shows "Launch Q3 campaign" with supporting notes about channels and deadlines, the AI will often generate subtasks like "Define target audiences," "Brief design team," and "Set up tracking." Subtasks can also be edited or deleted.

## Editing action items

Every item is editable inline. Tap an item to edit the text, add a note, change the state, or delete it. The AI's first pass is good but not sacred — fix anything that's wrong.

## Exporting and sharing

The full action item list can be exported via the share sheet in multiple formats. You can also copy individual items or the whole list as plain text and paste them into any other tool.

## Adding items manually

You can add action items manually to any board's list — useful for capturing decisions that came up verbally in the meeting but weren't written on the board.

Frequently asked

Does BoardSnap read every line as an action item?

No. BoardSnap AI distinguishes between action items (tasks with an owner or next step) and other board content (context, diagrams, background). Not everything on the board becomes an action item.

Can I add action items that weren't on the board?

Yes. After the analysis, you can add items manually to any board's action item list.
